Michael is a seasoned surety professional with nearly three decades of experience serving the construction industry. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting with a minor in Economics from Pittsburg State University and has built his career helping contractors, developers, and business owners navigate complex surety and risk management challenges.

Michael began his surety career in 1997 as a bond trainee with American States Insurance in Fort Scott, Kansas. Following the company’s acquisition by Safeco Insurance, he relocated to Kansas City in 1998 and later transferred to Boston in 2000. He returned to Kansas City in 2002 with St. Paul Surety before joining Zurich Surety in 2004 after Travelers acquired St. Paul. In 2006, Michael transitioned to the brokerage side of the industry, serving as a Surety Account Executive with a leading regional insurance broker specializing in construction risk and surety. He moved into a producer role in 2018 and joined Rich & Cartmill in 2025 as a Producer and Surety Specialist.

Today, Michael specializes in construction risk, surety bonding, real estate development, and related industries. Drawing on experience from both the carrier and brokerage sides of the business, he provides strategic guidance that helps clients strengthen their bonding capacity, manage risk, and achieve long-term business objectives.

Michael’s philosophy is rooted in partnership. He strives to serve as an extension of each client’s risk management team, delivering trusted advice, proactive communication, and solutions aligned with their goals. He believes that when his clients succeed, he succeeds.

A respected leader within the construction and surety communities, Michael has served in numerous industry leadership roles, including the AGC of Kansas Board of Directors, Membership Committee Chair for AGC of Kansas, Builders Association Board of Directors, Builders Association PAC, Kansas Contractors Association PAC, the AGC of America Construction Leadership Council National Steering Committee, and as Past Chair of the Construction Leadership Councils for both the Builders Association of Kansas City and AGC of Kansas. He has also served on NASBP’s 5-15 Leadership Committee, the Surety Association of Kansas City, and several additional construction and surety industry committees.

Michael and his wife, Angela, live in Shawnee, Kansas. Outside of work, they enjoy spending time with family and friends, traveling, riding motorcycles, and relaxing at the Lake of the Ozarks.
